Walk for Women 2026

Saturday 11 July 2026 | Virginia Water

Walk for Women returns for its 23rd year, bringing people together in solidarity to support women and girls across rural India.

Last year, thanks to an incredible community of supporters, we raised £6,837 including Gift Aid. We hope to build on that momentum in 2026 and reach even more women through grassroots programmes led by our partners in India.

About the Cause

Walk for Women supports a range of powerful, women led initiatives through Action Village India, working alongside grassroots organisations across India.

Supporting women with disabilities in Tamil Nadu

Across Minjur and Ellapuram, women with disabilities and their families are building more secure and dignified lives.
• 1,300 people have joined Self Help Groups
• Over 1,100 now hold disability ID cards
• Health camps, rehabilitation and livelihood support are strengthening independence

Keeping girls in education in Bihar and Jharkhand

More than 1,100 girls are supported to stay in school through:
• School fees, uniforms and learning materials
• Community engagement to challenge barriers to girls’ education
• Tuition and mentoring support

Building livelihoods in coastal Odisha

Women around Chilika Lake are forming Self Help Groups to:
• Start small businesses and poultry farming
• Strengthen financial independence
• Lead environmental action such as cyclone protection through plantation

Strengthening resilience in Madhya Pradesh

Indigenous and marginalised women are:
• Building small businesses and savings groups
• Accessing skills training
• Increasing resilience to climate change

Across all of these programmes, a common thread runs through: women organising, supporting one another, and creating change within their communities.

Stories of Empowerment

Supporting a sister with disability

After their parents passed away, Mahalakshmi returned home to care for her sister Devi. Unable to work, she struggled financially. Through a local support group, she received a small grant to buy two goats and create an income from home.

“Now that I am self sufficient, I am in a better position to take care of Devi and myself.”

Returning to education

Sumanti Soren from Jharkhand was forced to leave school at 15 after losing her parents. With support from the programme, she returned to education, passed her exams, and now hopes to build a career.

“I am deeply thankful for the support I received. It has given me confidence and hope for the future.”

What to Expect on the Day

The walk lasts around 2 to 3 hours and covers approximately 5 miles. It is open to all ages and abilities.

After the walk, we gather for a relaxed picnic, a chance to connect, and to learn more about the work supported through Action Village India.
