We are really pleased to present Tales of the Tribes five stories, beautifully animated by tribal artists, bringing their arts to people who would never otherwise have the opportunity to discover Indian tribal culture. Full of wit and humanity, the film demonstrates that contemporary art techniques work so well in maintaining minority cultures, which are otherwise easily subsumed into the mainstream. The stories are selected by an animated characterisation of Verrier Elwin (1902-1964), initially a British missionary, subsequently a tribal activist. Produced by Tara Douglas of the Adivasi Arts Trust through workshops with indigenous Adivasi and Tribal people.

Tara Douglas was born in India and graduated with BA Hons Animation from West Surrey College of Art and Design in 1993. She coordinated an indigenous animation project, ‘The Tallest Story Competition’ (2006) through West Highland Animation, Scotland, and screened films to 10,000 children in schools in Central India.

Tara published her PhD, ‘Tales of the Tribes: Animation as a Tool for Indigenous Representation’ (Bournemouth University 2015). She is co-founder and Secretary of the Adivasi Arts Trust, a Trustee of the Trust for Tribal Art Culture and Knowledge (India) and is associated with the North-Eastern Hill University in Shillong, Meghalaya, on a postdoctoral research project titled ‘The Stories of Our Ancestors’.

About Madras Café Unlocked

As a result of COVID-19, WOMAD festival 2020 has been cancelled which has a huge impact on Madras Café and AVI. This is normally a key fundraising event and an opportunity to raise awareness about AVI’s solidarity with rural communities across India. Our re-imagined event, Madras Café Unlocked brings you a summer of online content in support of Action Village India and partners. We launch our five ‘stages’: Madras Café Family, Madras Boombox, Food for Thought, Partnerships & Solidarity and our Exhibition: Food for Justice and Peace on the 24th, 25th & 26th of July and events will run throughout the summer up to 26th September, when we conclude with an International meal in support of Jai Jagat 2020.
